Debido a esto, si dicho escaño queda vacante por fallecimiento o dimisión de un parlamentario y se convocan elecciones parciales con carácter excepcional para cubrirlo ( by-election), el resultado de las mismas será tomado por los medios de comunicación como un indicador de la popularidad del gobierno. Por el contrario, el escaño que un partido suele ganar por amplia mayoría, debido a la homogeneidad en la tendencia política de los electores, se conoce como safe seat.
